Prior to World War II, Bulgaria was home to forty-eight thousand Jews. The warâin which this Danube satellite of the Habsburg Empire declared its Nazi allegianceâwas to change all that. By 1965 only fifty-one hundred Jews still lived in Bulgaria: the world Canetti grew up in had virtually disappeared. But for him, as we soon learn, it had already collapsed much earlier.
